“Flither Pickers”
Four fisher women gathering ‘flithers’ (limpets, mussels etc.) for fishing line bait on the bedrock beach at Robin Hoods Bay, a small village six miles South East of Whitby.
It was the job of the womenfolk to gather, skane (extract the flesh) and bait the line ready for the fishermen to go and catch the fish. They also had to clean the lines of any stale flithers and debris before re-baiting again.
