"Four Whitby Fishermen"
The above title is purely descriptive and it is only recently that the following title - “Long Line Fishermen” - has been attributed to this fine example of Sutcliffe’s genius for natural composition. The photograph was titled by Sutcliffe in a catalogue circa 1890.
From left to right they are: Bill Hawksfield, Jack Fordon, John Batchelor and Ben Weatherill, taking a break from the many arduous tasks that were part of their every day life. It is interesting to note that the wearing of hats was almost universal amongst men at that time.
