The Whitby 'yawl' seen on the right of this photograph was to be ousted by steam trawlers during the early 1900s, but these locally built, ketch rigged boats with loose footed mainsails and stump mainmasts were fishing between 1870 and 1905. They carried a coble on the maindeck.
The practice of hanging washing out to dry over the upper harbour was commonplace at that time.
