“Hell Fire Corner, Lealholm ”
Taken at Hell Fire Corner, so named because of its wild and bleak environment with Ben Well House farm in the background.
The Scythe or ‘lye’ which the man is carrying has at the end a bow shaped out of hazel. This swept the mown corn in such a way that it was easy to rake and gather into sheaves. At the opposite end of the handle is a strickle used to sharpen the blade.
