“Staithes, Circa 1875”
A North Yorkshire coastal village steeped in history and legend. It was Staithes where Captain James Cook had his first taste of the sea. He worked in Mr Sanderson's Haberdasher's shop which stood next door to the present Cod and Lobster Inn.
In this photograph the Inn can be seen in the distance around which a group of figures are standing. The Cod and Lobster has been washed into the sea on four occasions, the last time being in 1953. One of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe's earliest photographs.
