“Staithes”
Many of Sutcliffe’s photographs were taken here at Staithes, which is about nine miles north west along the coast from Whitby.
The cliff in the background is known as Cowbar Nab. At this time the harbour was almost unprotected from the full force of the sea. Later stone jetties were built to help protect the village and in more recent times major engineering work has gone ahead as part of the fight against coastal erosion.
