“The ‘Rachel Lotinga’ ”
The ‘Rachel Lotinga’ seen here aground in Whitby’s harbour bar, was a 252 tonne ‘Snow’ built in Sunderland 1855. A ‘Snow’ was a variant of a brig rigged sailing ship. However, she was later converted to a Schooner.
In 1862 she was sailing from London to the Natal with different cargo. Then between 1875-1885 she was owned by J. Brown of Middlesbrough.
