Sutcliffe was no great lover of steam tugs - largely because of the filthy smoke emitted from their boilers burning low-grade coal. Taken in Whitby lower harbour, a Lowestoft registered lugger is moored at the left against the harbour wall with the tandem funnelled paddle tug 'Guide' near her. On the right is the 'Cleveland', a paddle tug owned by the North Eastern Railway Company and built at South Shields in 1881.
