“ Fishergirls”
Sutcliffe exploited the mixture of smoke from fishermen’s cottages and sea-fret which so often veils Whitby. All detail was subdued and a luminous backdrop was provided for his subjects.
Although Sutcliffe left very little information with his negatives we believe the names of the girls to be - far right Nell Bakehouse or more locally termed ‘Baccus’, then Ada Young and next to her Charlotte Constable and Elizabeth Leng. The name of the fifth girl is unknown.
