“ Beggars Bridge”
The romantic legend built up around this bridge at Glaisdale centres on a poor boy of the village who wished to marry the daughter of a well-to-do family living on the opposite side of the River Esk.
His wooing was discouraged by the girl’s father, so to prove his merit the boy left home to win the proverbial fortune, did so, returned home and to show that he was now a worthy contender for the girl of his dreams, built this bridge across the Esk.
The photograph, by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, does full justice to the suitor’s endeavours!
