This was only one of the many arduous tasks carried out by fisherwomen of the North Yorkshire Coast during the 19th century. This photograph was taken on Whitby Scaur, a beach composed of solid bed-rock. Shipwrecks were commonplace on this coast and provided much of the wood washed ashore.
