“Fisherpeople on Tate Hill Sands”
The boat being painted is a clinker-built Yorkshire Coble, a design much favoured by Whitby fishermen and which during the 1800s could be either rowed or sailed but which at the present time is often fitted with an inboard diesel engine.
The coble was designed to be launched from a beach into the surf. The general shape, if not detailed construction, of this boat reaches back thousands of years to the early Scandinavian boat builders.
