“Henry Freeman”
Lifeboatman for over forty years and sole survivor of the Whitby lifeboat disaster of 1861 when the twelve other members of the crew were drowned close by Whitby's West Pier.
His escape from death was attributed to the recently introduced Board of Trade cork life jacket which he is seen wearing in this photograph. He died in December 1904 aged 69.
