“Harrowing at Lealholm”
A three horse team, chain harrowing in Foulbriggs Field on Lealholm Hall Farm.
The harrow was a heavy framed implement with iron teeth pointing downwards which when dragged across the soil broke up the heavy clods of earth left by the plough.
Harrowing would also follow after the seed of barley or wheat had been sown - “to make a good mould and hap the seed”.
