“Stoking Up”
The crew of a ‘mud-hopper’ - a primitive type of flat bottomed dredger which was shovelled full of mud a low tied, floated off at high tide and the contents dumped at sea or wherever no obstruction would be caused.
The man on the left is Freddie Kingston. He led an adventurous life, taking part in the Australian Gold Rush where he was trapped in a bush fire. Coincidentally, it was fire which brought about his death in a conflagration at Grosmont Foundry in 1915.
