“Whitby in Winter”
The covering of snow transforms this view across the lower harbour with the outline of St. Hilda’s Abbey on the horizon. Nowadays it seems rare to see so much snow near the sea
The huts in the foreground are the Victorian ‘bathing machines’ which in the summer months would be used by the visitors to the town. They would be drawn down to the water’s edge by horses allowing the bathers to step modestly into the sea, thus not exposing too much of themselves to the public gaze.
