“The Robert and Mary Ellis Lifeboat”
Whitby’s rowing lifeboat ‘Robert and Mary Ellis’ being launched from the beach surrounded by crew members, many of whom are wearing cumbersome cork life jackets.
In 1861 one of these newly introduced Board of Trade cork life jackets saved the life of a crew member during a tragic lifeboat disaster. Henry Freeman was the sole survivor, whilst the other twelve crew, who were not wearing life jackets, were drowned close by Whitby’s West Pier.
