“Whitby under snow - from Larpool”
Much of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe’s work was carried out within the area visible on this photograph. Looking northwards towards the sea are the lower reaches of the River Esk and Whitby town. The Abbey ruins and St. Mary’s parish church are on the horizon towards the right.
Many of the large boats moored here traded with Baltic ports which would have been ice-bound during the winter months. The owners saved money by having the ships laid up in Whitby, thus paying a lower rate of insurance.
