"Women in New Way Ghaut, Whitby"
Taken by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe during the 1890's in New Way Ghaut, a narrow passage off Church Street leading down to the harbourside.
Sutcliffe once wrote ‘...There are also many other yards and courts, but some of these are only about three or four feet wide, it is difficult to get enough light into them to work by.’
Sutcliffe has overcome this technical difficulty and the edge lighting entering the photograph from the left transforms this from what would have been a rather ordinary figure study to an arresting picture.
